The Challenge
The client had built their first platform on a monolithic architecture that worked fine at 5,000 students. At 30,000, video streams started buffering, live classes crashed on 500+ concurrent attendees, and their completion rate — already at an industry-average 15% — was going in the wrong direction. The business model depended on completions, not enrollments. They needed a rebuild that could scale, but also one that could actively move the completion needle.
Our Solution
We restructured to a Node.js microservices architecture so the video delivery service could scale independently from the live class service and the course catalog. Video goes through Cloudflare CDN with adaptive bitrate — the stream drops quality before it drops frames, which keeps buffering at zero even on slower connections. We built an AI recommendation engine using collaborative filtering on completion patterns; when a student stalls on a section, the system surfaces a shorter related video that bridges the gap. Live classes run on WebSocket for real-time chat, with MongoDB backing flexible course content that instructors can update without a deploy cycle.
The Results
