The Challenge
The client had a working MVP they'd built in-house — good enough to get 500 paying customers, not good enough to scale. Every new enterprise prospect asked two things: "Is our data isolated from other customers?" and "What's your SLA?" The answer to both was unsatisfactory. Their monolithic database had no multi-tenancy isolation, so a single slow query could degrade every customer's experience. And their billing flow — manual invoices via email — was becoming a full-time job. They needed a complete backend rebuild without losing their existing 500 teams.
Our Solution
The most critical architectural decision was multi-tenancy. We implemented PostgreSQL row-level security so every query is tenant-scoped at the database level — no application-layer bug can leak cross-tenant data. Node.js microservices let the notification service and the analytics service scale independently from core project management. Redis handles caching and WebSocket session management for real-time collaboration, keeping response times under one second even at 100,000+ concurrent users. Stripe subscription management replaced the manual invoicing nightmare, with a freemium-to-enterprise upgrade flow that converts without engineering involvement. Jira, Slack, and GitHub integrations run via webhooks so teams can stay in their existing workflows.
